Almost everyone knows the classic sparklers. As soon as they are lit, they begin to cheerfully sparkle and bring a smile to the faces of children and adults alike. But these candles are special because they not only have a special shape, but also a great colour.
Ralph Bilski had this idea in 1999 and founded his company Wondercandle. Only a short time later, production began. For more than 20 years now, the company has been working together with the Hagsfelder Werkstätten. There, the sparklers are made by hand. There are various different departments and professions at the Hagsfelder Werkstätten, where people with disabilities can do a job and develop themselves according to their interests and abilities.
The locations of the two German companies are very close to each other. Today, however, the candles are also sold internationally, as they are the first sparklers in a special shape and colour. These include letters, numbers and funny shapes like little stars or shamrocks. Instead of the typical black and grey coating, they are also available in silver, gold and rose gold. These creations were joined a few years later by the Wondercake. A fun idea and easy to give away, this name comes with a small cake in a tin including a spoon, candle and match.
Of course, you can also make a small cake yourself to present the candles perfectly. Depending on the occasion, an elaborate cake or a small cake may be more suitable, and the sparkling sparklers always go with it anyway. Perfect for a gift on the go, for a buffet or a younger birthday girl, for example, a simple cupcake with great decorations fits perfectly!
Sparkling chocolate cupcakes
120 g butter
140 g dark couverture
120 g egg white
60 g ground almonds
20 g ground hazelnuts
50 g white flour
170 g sugar
Melt the butter and couverture together and then mix with the egg white to a homogeneous mass. Mix the remaining ingredients together and add them as well. Mix well again and then prepare a baking tray. Place paper cases in it or simply spray with baking spray. Then spread the batter into the 12 cavities. Bake the cupcakes at 160 degrees for about 18 minutes and then transfer to a wire rack to cool.
Now it's time to decorate. Of course you can serve the cupcakes as they are, they are definitely delicious! For a very special decoration, you can cover them with fondant and decorate them with little flowers or figurines. With the right cookie cutters and silicone moulds, you can also make more complicated shapes in no time at all. Individual components can then be attached to the creation with a little edible glue.
A delicious topping also looks great on your cupcakes. For example, you can make a cream cheese mixture, a butter cream, flavoured whipped cream or an airy vanilla cream. Fill it into a piping bag with a star or rosette nozzle. These make it easy to pipe the typical cupcake hats. It looks especially great if you sprinkle on some edible glitter in the right colour or spray it on with the pump sprayer.
Now there's just one thing missing: the candle! Choose your favourite Wondercandle. Letters, numbers or would you prefer a star or a cloverleaf? Unpack the candle and put it into your little cake with the wire. It's ready to be served.
To make the candle sparkle, you have to light it with a match or a firelighter. The latter is a little easier and quicker. The special sparkling topping, especially if it is coloured, takes a little time to catch fire. Usually about 8 seconds with the lighter is enough, but especially outside in windy or cold weather it can take longer. Just be patient and hold the flame nicely anywhere on the covering.
When the candle starts to spark, keep it at least 1 m away from the body and from flammable materials. Also follow the safety instructions on the packaging. Do not hold the burning candle in your hand and only approach it again when it has gone out. This way, nothing can go wrong and you can be sure of a sparkling presentation of your dessert!
