Bosch is a household name to almost everyone these days. As a manufacturer of various technical devices, systems and components, Bosch has divisions all over the world. The assortment ranges from car components for industry to small workshop utensils and large household appliances. In all areas, Bosch is known for good quality and innovation.
Over the years, the company has been through a lot and survived some crises. The first workshop was founded in 1886, when Robert Bosch took on various orders for precision mechanics and electrical engineering in Stuttgart. At first it was difficult to gain a foothold, but after a few years things started to look up.
The work to be done was very varied. For example, if a bell needed to be repaired or a small component was required, Robert Bosch could be contacted. For example, he was commissioned to build a magneto ignition device based on a model. He did so, but also made some improvements. This and other adaptations made the magneto ignition device more reliable and Bosch quickly became the world's leading supplier to car manufacturers.
With many employees and the great demand, the need for space also increased and a large factory was built. The newly acquired space was soon no longer enough and production spread additionally to the surrounding buildings.
in 1904, Bosch products arrived in Switzerland. With a location in England, Bosch gained its first headquarters outside Germany. Offshoots followed in other European countries and, a little later, locations in America, South America, Africa, Australia, China and Japan.
With the start of the First World War, contact with the locations broke off and production was completely switched to armaments. Instead of magnetos and lighting systems for cars, weapon parts and hand grenade fuses were now produced. Since a large part of the employees had been drafted into the military, women took over production. After the war, some of them stayed, many men never returned. In addition, the company's patents had been expropriated and some of the worldwide locations were lost.
In the following period, the company concentrated on new innovations. In addition to car parts for newer engines, the first hammer drills and hair clippers were developed and produced. Another new development was the assembly line, which made it possible to reduce the production time of some parts to less than a fifth. With some partners, the first televisions for the home were also produced during this time.
Unfortunately, the Second World War soon followed, which again led to huge losses. Production was switched back to armaments and many employees had to go to war. Some of them were replaced by forced labourers, but Bosch was also committed to helping those persecuted during the war. More Jews were hired to protect them from deportation or to enable them to flee the country with financial support.
As a production site for war goods, the Bosch factory was naturally an important target. Accordingly, large parts of the company were destroyed. Since the war was lost, there were also some restrictions imposed by the Allies, who wanted to prevent Germany's big businesses from rising and spreading again. In the end, the company did not have to be downsized, but all patents were disclosed.
In return, workers were allowed to resume their activities, not quite as before, of course. Instead of producing fine electrotechnical parts and equipment, they began to rebuild and produce very rustic goods that the workers could sell or trade in. These included, for example, pots and bowls made from helmets.
After this hard time, however, a great upswing followed again. The factory was rebuilt and with mass production, various appliances became affordable for ordinary people. Kitchen appliances, drills for the home and refrigerators were increasingly found in private households. Only now did DIY really become possible.
A lot has happened since then and Bosch has continued to develop. With innovation and quality, new products have been developed and the world market has been conquered once again. Bosch's goals are clearly formulated and constantly pursued. These include a future- and profit-oriented way of working, efforts towards sustainability, initiative and fairness. As a reliable and responsible company, Bosch also communicates its internal business objectives and rules of conduct publicly.
Internally, compliance with rules, laws and the internal code of conduct is encouraged. Furthermore, there is also a code with basic requirements for economic partners as well as a basic attitude towards laws and ethical issues, which apply to all locations around the world. In this way, Bosch guarantees equal quality, fairness and a high level of responsibility in all areas.
