The taste and aroma of ginger

Ginger delights with its refreshing note and sweet, lemony taste. It is the perfect addition to delicious sweet potato puree, gives prawns that certain something, harmonizes wonderfully with homemade jam, enriches fresh fruit salads and peps up stir-fried vegetables.

Ginger and its botanical properties

This exquisite Indian ginger is carefully harvested by hand. The perennial tropical plant, botanically known as Zingiber officinale, grows in the form of a tuber. This aromatic rhizome belongs to the fascinating Zingiberaceae family, which also includes cardamom, turmeric and Ethiopian cororima. After about 10 months of growth, the Indian plant can reach a height of up to 1 meter, but the real treasure lies in the underground part - the root, also known as the rhizome. Ginger needs a lot of warmth to thrive in all its glory, which is why it is not possible to grow it in your own garden in Europe.

The fascinating history of ginger

Arab merchants referred to ginger as "zenj", a term that honored the people on the east coast of Africa. In the Middle Ages, ginger was revered as a magical plant due to its exciting, aphrodisiac properties!
In the 18th century, ginger found its place in a special vessel, the "ginger pot", and in China it was presented as a wonderful gift for newlyweds, a symbol of fertility and new life.
In Europe, important artists such as Cézanne and Van Gogh immortalized these pots in their works. As you can probably tell, ginger is a spice that not only has a long tradition in French cuisine, but still plays an indispensable role today. Be inspired by the versatility and flavors of ginger!
