What is the fascinating 4-spice blend made up of?

This wonderful blend combines the powerful black Penja pepper, aromatic Ceylon cinnamon, exquisite nutmeg from Sri Lanka and intense cloves.
The black Penja pepper, which grows in the fertile province of Moungo in western Cameroon, is a true gift of nature. It comes from the climbing plant Piper nigrum, which climbs up a sturdy pole. The berries of this plant thrive in a warm, humid climate. In Penja, where the volcanic soil provides the ideal environment for the pepper vines, a pepper of the highest quality is produced. Be inspired by this unique blend and experience the powerful aromas in your kitchen!

Ceylon cinnamon, which originates in Sri Lanka, is the precious bark of the cinnamon tree, which belongs to the laurel family - a family that also includes the avocado tree and the laurel tree. Cinnamon, known as Cinnamomum zeylanicum, grows on trees that can reach impressive heights of 10 to 15 meters. To obtain the delicious cinnamon sticks, the fresh twigs are carefully pruned and their aromatic bark is removed. After drying, they are transformed into cinnamon sticks that can be used directly in the kitchen or ground into fine cinnamon powder. While Sri Lanka is the main place of cultivation, cinnamon is also cultivated in other tropical regions of the world. Let this wonderful spice inspire you and bring a touch of the exotic into your kitchen! Nutmeg is a wonderful fruit that comes from the majestic nutmeg tree. This impressive tree can grow up to 16 meters high and belongs to the fascinating Myristicaceae family.
Cloves, on the other hand, are the dried flower buds of the aromatic clove tree. This tropical tree, which belongs to the Myrtaceae family, has its roots in the picturesque Moluccan archipelago in Indonesia. The flowers are harvested by hand with great care as soon as the buds turn a delicate shade of red. They are then gently dried on mats in the sun, turning them regularly to ensure optimum quality. Finally, they are carefully sorted by hand to bring out the best in this precious spice!

The fascinating history of the 4-spice blend

The 4-spice blend has its origins in a unique spice: the Jamaica berry. This wonderful berry delights with its intense aromas reminiscent of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. Its English name, "allspice", reflects the diversity of its flavors. As Jamaica berries are not always available, the 4-spice blend was developed so that these delicious flavors could be enjoyed at any time.
In the Middle Ages, the 4-spice blend was already being used to marinate game meat, poultry and even in the production of liqueurs. It has gained a firm place in our European kitchens and continues to inspire us! Let yourself be inspired by its many possibilities and bring new zest to your dishes!
