the success story of Katy Sue Designs began in 1993. At that time, however, the sales concept looked quite different. Doreen Thompson and her daughter Susan Balfour started making tiny porcelain figurines. Each piece was made by hand with a lot of love. The two did not have their own production facility at the time, so the project took place in their own kitchen.

Sales were successful and the two founders soon discovered other product branches for themselves. For example, various paper products were added to the Katy Sue Designs range. It did not stop with the two employees and their own home as a workshop. In South Shields, where they both lived, they opened their first factory, where some of the products are still made today. Sales were also greatly expanded, and today the high-quality articles from Katy Sue Designs are available in over 50 countries. The company is still run by mother and daughter.

In 2012, the most important product branch was added. The popular silicone moulds were added to the range! These allow the production of patterns, motifs and figures that would otherwise require years of practice, a lot of dexterity and various modelling tools. So the silicone moulds are perfect for novices who want to create detailed decorations as well as for professionals who can save so much time and concentrate on other things.

Today, Katy Sue Designs offers a huge selection of different embossing shapes and new motifs are added every year. These are all designed by the company's in-house designers. To ensure that the silicone moulds work optimally and are easy to use, they work closely with specialists from all over the world. For example, many silicone embossing moulds were created with a world-renowned confectioner who has worked for the British Royal Family. He made cakes with beautiful decorations for the royals, even for the Queen herself. So you benefit from the tips of real professionals!

Use

With silicone embossers you can create stunning figures and shapes in no time at all. The moulds are perfect for beginners as well as for advanced users. The embossers allow beginners to create detailed and complicated motifs right from the start. In addition, identical shapes can be made in a very short time. All you need is a silicone embosser, some fondant and baker's starch.

To prevent the chosen mass from sticking to the embosser, dust it with baker's starch. You can apply a little baker's starch or simply fill the embosser with it and then empty it out again. A fine layer of starch remains, which does not colour the fondant white but protects it from sticking.

Now choose the first colour with which you will create the details that are to be expressed afterwards. For a face, for example, this would be the eyes, the nose and the mouth, for a sunflower the brown centre. Shape the fondant accordingly and carefully press it into the silicone embosser. Add layers of fondant in this way. On top of the pupils, add the iris or the white of the eyes, on top of that again the face colour, with a little pink you can highlight the lips and the cheeks.

Once all the details are in place, fill the mould completely with fondant in the basic colour, for example the skin colour or the yellow of the flower. Press the fondant well into the mould, this is the only way to see the fine textures afterwards. Then use a knife without serrations or an angled spatula to remove the remaining mass that sticks out of the mould.

Then invert the silicone embosser. Depending on the shape of the embosser and the stickiness of the fondant, the motif will come right out or you may have to help it along a little. Sometimes it is enough to tap the edge of the embosser lightly on the table. Silicone embossers are very flexible and can therefore be bent easily. This frees up the edge of the fondant a little and it can be removed from the mould with your fingertips or a modelling tool. You can then leave the modelled shape to dry, work it out further or apply it directly to the final product.

Particularly detailed and elegant creations can be made with the help of powder colours. Put some powder paint on a piece of household paper or on a small plate. The colour can then be applied with a fine brush. In this way, you can give a face delicate pink cheeks, a rose slightly lighter or darker coloured petal edges and autumnal leaves a beautiful colour gradient.

Other patterns or shapes can also be added with a modelling tool. For example, you can add more leaf veins or a beautifully shaped mouth. If necessary, you can also add further details using sugar decorations or fondant. For example, you can add the eyes to a fairy face or a small butterfly to the edge of a flower. You can glue the decorations on with a little edible glue or royal icing.

This way, even very complicated shapes, flowers and figures can be made in no time at all and are ready to decorate your treats. With silicone moulds from Katy Sue, your decorations are guaranteed to succeed! The finished designs are perfect for cakes, cookies, cupcakes and much more! The silicone moulds can also be used with liquid isomalt, clay or other mouldable masses, even soaps can be shaped with them.
