At FPC Sugarcraft, everything revolves around the creation of beautiful decorations from sugar masses. Hundreds of different silicone embossers are available. With these, professionals and beginners alike can create detailed 3D figures and motifs in no time at all. Thanks to their ease of use and stunning results, silicone embossers are a great tool for creating decorations for cakes, cupcakes and cakes.
FPC Sugarcraft is a family business based in Bristol in the UK. They specialise fully in the manufacture of a wide variety of silicone embossers, making them experts in the field. New designs are added every year. These are all designed by FPC Sugarcraft themselves, from time to time a real object makes it to the mould. If an employee comes across a particularly beautiful old key, for example, a cast can be made of it, which is then used to make the silicone mould. Usually, however, the moulds are designed by the employees.
Silicone moulds can be used in many different ways. Primarily, of course, the silicone moulds from FPC Sugarcraft are intended for use with fondant-like masses and therefore also have the optimum properties for these. However, other materials can also be moulded in them, although the processing may be slightly different.
Sometimes it is worth using a different auxiliary material so that nothing sticks together; baker's starch is very suitable for fondant. It's best to try things out a bit and use rather uncomplicated shapes without filigree parts. For example, you can make elegant soaps, pretty clay figures or motifs from modelling clay such as Fimo. For this purpose, the embossers can be frozen without any problems and for a very short time they can also withstand temperatures of up to 250 ºC, but they are by no means suitable for baking.
FPC Sugarcraft and of course we always work with edible materials. Fondant, modelling clay, flower paste, at most marzipan or modelling chocolate can be used. A mixture of equal parts of flower paste and rolled fondant is ideal.
Before use, the silicone mould should be rinsed briefly and patted dry. The chosen mixture is then kneaded until nice and smooth. Several colours can also be used. To make sure that nothing sticks to the mould, a little baker's starch can be sprinkled on top. To do this, either put some baker's starch in a fresh stocking and dust finely over it, or fill the mould completely and empty it out again. This leaves a fine layer that cannot be seen on the final product, but prevents it from sticking.
Then press the mass into the silicone embosser. The easiest way is to use only one colour, then press a single lump firmly into it. Use your fingertips to press a little more everywhere so that the details are transferred optimally.
Then remove the excess with a small angled spatula or a knife. To do this, cut away the mass with small sawing movements from the inside to the outside along the surface. By cutting from the inside to the outside and by helping with the fingers of the other hand, you can prevent the modelling clay from warping.
If you want to work with several masses, put the outermost layer in first, for example the eyes in a face or the brown centre of a sunflower. Then the next colour is added, until finally the base colour is filled in completely. If the mixture does not stick well, a little edible glue can be added between each layer of colour. Then, as with the single-colour version, remove the excess paste.
Now it's time to mould. Thanks to the high flexibility of the soft silicone, it can simply be bent a little, so the motif usually comes right out. For very delicate and delicate figures, the whole thing can also be frozen for about 20 minutes. Afterwards, however, the modelling clay should have some time to thaw again. To do this, it is best to dust it with a little baker's starch to prevent it from softening.
Then the motif can be used or dried a little to be painted afterwards. With powder colours or powder colours dissolved in a little alcohol, the 3D figures can be refined into true works of art. You can see examples of this in each product picture, the figures shown there are examples of the FPC Sugarcraft.
Of course, painting takes a little practice, but with creativity and patience you can create beautiful and lifelike figures. There are two different basic techniques that can be used to decorate the motifs. Either dry powder, powder or glitter is used, or one of these is mixed with a little high-proof alcohol and applied in this way.
For a liquid colour, choose a powder, powder or glitter colour that dissolves well. Mix it with a few drops of 90% alcohol. This evaporates very quickly, so the mixture does not soften and the decorated cake can be enjoyed by children and pregnant women.
The mixed colour is then applied to the dried motif with a fine brush. It should no longer be deformed by the brush strokes, but it does not have to be completely hardened either. If you want to apply a more opaque coat or several colours on top of each other, we recommend that you always let the individual layers dry a little first. This will prevent you from smearing the layer underneath or taking it off right away.
A dry powder is also applied with a fine brush. This works particularly well if the motif is painted in one or a few colours. This technique is less suitable for multi-layered or very detailed painted figures. However, a finished painted figure can be refined with a little glitter, for example.
With the help of the silicone embossers from FPC Sugercraft, you are guaranteed to succeed in even complicated decorations with little effort!
